Hugging the Un-huggable

This is Ubaldino. He is suffering from psoriasis, an autoimmune condition that causes sores all over his body, and swelling and arthritic symptoms in his joints. So great is his skin problem that scar tissue has deformed his hands. His entire body is covered in painful, itchy sores. He is extremely poor, has been cast out by his parents, and is unable to work.

He just turned 20.

The first time I saw Ubaldino, he was walking down the street, arms wrapped around his chest as if to protect himself. I am sure he must feel as if he is an outcast of society. The second time I saw him, I chatted with him and he shared a little of his story. I laid my hand on his shoulder to pray for him and he warmed at my touch.

Yesterday when I saw him (it's been months now of connecting) he ran across the street yelling "mommy! and threw his arms around my neck.

Such a sweet, gentle boy.

He'd been to a hospital 4 hours away and received an injection (I am guessing steroids) and was feeling much stronger. He energy was up, and he had a big smile on his face as he described how he was feeling.

But he didn't have anything to eat.

So we went shopping :-)

A huge bag of rice, potatoes, canned sardines and tuna, eggs, oatmeal, corn meal, lentils, fresh chicken, soap, toothpaste...he made really wise choices as to what to put in his basket.

We had to get help for him to carry everything home.

We can make a difference. And as much as shopping provides much needed food for this little guy's belly, it's the hugs that bring hope and healing.

Trees in the Middle of the Road

Trees in the road. I mean right in the middle of the road. Really big trees. Its one of the most peculiar things I have seen here along Mexico's Riviera Maya coast. At first I thought it was just a particular type of tree. The people here revere the ceiba. Its rumored to be the home of a goddess. Don't knock on the trunk or she will come out and steal young men's souls. Well that seems like a very good reason never to cut down a ceiba tree. But I think the real answer is much simpler than that. The people here respect the age and beauty of great things. Old people, old cities, and of course, old trees. I asked a local, "Why do they build roads right around trees?" And he looked at me as if the answer was obvious, "Why would you ever cut down an old tree when you can preserve it?" Simple enough for me. I love trees.

Dancing with the Masai

I think I walked into a National Geographic magazine. You know, like when you open a book and the pictures come so alive that you get sucked into a different world. This Masai woman lived in a tiny village complete with dung and ash huts and flocks of goats protected from lions by an extremely tall fence made from young acacia trees. She was a little suspicious of me until I joined in the dance, bouncing and clacking the beaded rings she gave me to wear around my neck. Oh joy, great joy! Dancing with the Masai on the African plain!

Refuse to be Safe!

I refuse to be safe. I have been back in The States for about 6 weeks now and I keep hearing this phrase everywhere. "I'm so glad you're safe" Does this mean I wasn't safe before? I keep hearing it everywhere, not just directed at me. Everyone is saying it to everyone. Like Zombies walking around asking each other, "Are you safe?" "Yes, I'm safe."  "I'm so glad you're safe." What has happened?! Is the world such a big scary place out there?  I see all over Facebook people talking about how they are afraid for people who are traveling, especially going over seas. I see people saying they will never go anywhere. LORD< SEND ME! How can we change the world if we are safe? I believe this is all by design. I believe the powers that be want you to stay home and watch your TV. I believe they want to distract you, disconnect you, instill fear in you. PARALYZE YOU! Don't let them. Get out of your comfort...
